Ka-boom!

As I was coming home last night from an appointment, the night sky south of Alcatraz Avenue lit up spectacularly behind the buildings. As I drove west on Alcatraz it was pretty dark (although the pockets were odd ... the signals were working fine). So that, and the fact that I was not hearing sirens, made me realize that some piece of power equipment had gone blooey.

It was block-by-block by the time I got out here, but my block was one of them. It exposed the inadequacies of my emergency stores as it took me a while to find both a suitable candle and something to light it with. I was, however, amused that my blackberry screen was providing most of the illumination.

There was nothing for it but to go to bed, and when I got up, all three of the pussycats were on the bed with me. No drama, but they had been plenty dramatic enough as I conked out - lots of Maggie chasing the other two around the house.

It always amuses me when I see people using mobile phone screens as torches! (I have a teeny LED light on my keyring, which has proved incredibly useful on occasion, especially as the hall of my house unaccountably has no light-switch by the front door).

I wondered if houses were affected by it. It just seemed to be streetlights. Many streets with no streetlights had light coming from household windows. I got home around 10:15 and put some stuff in the microwave. The power dropped twice during that session, so I got my "candela" lights out just in case. I have to put a note on my to-do list to find and plug in my Coleman lamp.

Mine definitely was. Streetlights were out on my block as well.

The blocks immediately south and back of mine had lights.

Wow. What happened?
Many years ago when I lived in your neck of the woods, I was up late at night doing homework over the phone with a fellow student. She said "Wow! what was that?" I started to ask what, and then I felt it. We figured it must have been somewhere between us (I think we lived a mile or two apart) because we'd both felt it. Turned out it was all the way out in Richmond. A refinery blew up, I think.

From where I was, it didn't boom, just flash REALLY BIG.

It concerned me. Definitely "the alients are landing" effect.
